Xbox Sky Player - Possible Channel Listings & Prices Revealed

As most of you will know the Xbox Sky player will be available in the UK from Tuesday 27th October, however what we do not know is what channels and on-demand services will be available, let alone how much the service will cost.

Well the guys over at "Xbox360Achievements.org" have come across XML data that feeds directly to the Xbox / Sky Player itself and inside this bit of data contains information about the sky players chanel listings aswell as other things.

According to this data there will be 20 Live streaming channels available from launch, which are:

* G.O.L.D
* Sky Real Lives
* Sky Arts 1
* Sky Movies 1 & 2
* Sky Movies 1, 2, 3 and Xtra
* Sky Sports News
* British Eurospot
* ESPN
* ESPN Classic
* Sky News
* National Geographic
* National Geographic Wild
* History
* Eden
* Cartoon Network
* Boomerang
* Discovery Channel

More channels could be added after launch, still these are the exclusive channels that module be acquirable at launch, Sky1 is absent from the list still Sky1 programs (channel) module be availe to download using the Sky players \"on demand\" service.

All this sounds rather interesting, still its the price thats the problem, non-sky subscribers can clear £15 a month (and not be tied to any contract) for these \"entertainment\" live channels aswell as a selection of \"on-demand\" channels, still the Sky Sports & Movie channels module outlay extra.

Another \"possible\" downfall is that the Sky Player haw \"not\" be liberated to all underway Sky Subscribers, as ostensibly the assist module exclusive be acquirable to Multi-room and/or band subscribers - if this is true, then underway sky subscribers would have to clear an added £9.75 a month to ingest the sky contestant on the Xbox 360.

At the moment this is mostly \"speculation\" as me (and the website that found the info) are assuming that this content is correct, if the content is precise i should be healthy to ingest the Xbox Sky contestant for liberated without any problems - still for the others, id rather meet intend added Sky Box (for multiroom) or follow with standard freeview.

Cube2: Is it finally taking off?

Ahh, qudobup and Charly are back and posting. Lots of interesting news even for me!
So what can I add to this? Well first of all I forgot to mention this awesome TBS in my last post: UFO2000, which is of course like UFO:AI a clone of a very well known series.
And I should have also mentioned Stellar Forces which is a remake of Laser Squad :)

Cube2 Engine

So as you might have guessed todays topic will be the Cube2/Sauerbraten engine, which besides being a mighty fine game on its own, has also spawned some great offspring projects lately. Blood Frontier has been mentioned before and since there have not been any new releases since then I will keep it short and just mention this video review which gives you an idea of the game play. But check it out if you have not done so yet!

Platinum Arts Sandbox

Plantinum Arts Sandbox has also been mentioned here before, and could be quickly described as a game development platform aimed at kids (and adults), utilizing all the nice in game editor features the Cube2 engine offers (and more).

Recent news are that they are hosting a nice contest , they have also just announced a new version. And besides offering the usual amount of fixes and updates, it now boasts a really nice 2D platformer template for you to create new games:

Furthermore they have templates for RPG projects and for wanna be film makers a new tool called movie cube (movies made with game engines are also called Machinima for those unfamiliar with the term).

Syntensity

Syntensity is a project quite similar to the one mentioned above, albeit with a more mature focus. Their feature list is long and even though still under heavy development it is starting to be a really nice tool for game developers.

And besides the fact that we are happy to announce that they have chosen our network for hosting their community forums, they have also recently released a really nice new game template called Razanak:

So check it out via the Syntensity lobby (the mod gets dowloaded automatically when you enter the corresponding portal), and see for yourself what a powerful game making tool Syntensity has become.

Left 4 Dead 2 on Xbox 360

Left 4 Dead 2 on Xbox 360
Left 4 Dead 2 - An upcoming synergetic FPS game.A sequel to Valve Corporation's award-winning Left 4 Dead. The mettlesome is currently set to launch on Nov 17, 2009 for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360. It will build upon the cooperatively convergent gameplay of the original and will be using Valve's proprietary Source engine, the aforementioned mettlesome engine used in Left 4 Dead. The mettlesome made its concern premiere at E3 2009 with a trailer during the Microsoft press event.

The sequel involves the aftermath of an apocalyptic pandemic. There has been an outbreak of a rabies-like pathogen that causes infected humans to behave like zombies. The four survivors have to fight their way through the hordes of infected, using safehouses along the way to rest and recover, in order to reach extraction points.

Dragonball Raging Blast Demo Now Available on Xbox Live Marketplace

NAMCO Bandai's latest fighting game adaptation of Dragonball Z (or the Dragonball Universe) gets released next month.

However people eager to play the game (as this time its Spike's turn to develop the game, instead of last years attempt by DIMPS - Spike are the guys that made the "Budokai Tenkachi Series on PS2 and Wii) will be glad to know that a playable demo of Dragonball Raging Blast is now available to download on Xbox Live Marketplace.

The Demo is 262mb in size and contains three playable characters which are Goku, Piccolo and Raditz which can battle it out in VS Mode, against a CPU or against another player.

Dragonball Raging Blast is expected to be released in the UK on 13th November 2009 and will retail for around £39.99

Three Xbox 360 Games Released onto

Its Wednesday and that can only mean one thing for Xbox gamers like me and that is that Xbox Live Marketplace gets updated with numerous amount of content such as Videos, Games, Demos Game-Add-ons and Xbox Live Arcade Games.

Even though the popular additions to this weeks marketplace are the "Rock Band Queen Track Pack" or the extra album for The Beatles: Rock Band, i also noticed that three, Xbox 360 games have been released onto the "Games On Demand" (Download to Own) service.

Though this service, in theory, is a good idea, its the prices at the minute that are keeping it from being more popular, last week saw the release of Rockstars GTAIV and being sold at £19.99, which is exactly the same price as it is in stores now since the game has now gone into the £19.99 Classic selection.

Well this week see's the release of Army Of Two, Sonic Unleashed and Midnight Club: Los Angeles and its the first time (i think) that more than 1 or 2 full xbox 360 games have been released onto the service.

The only downfall is that each game costs £19.99 and because the games are well over a year old (from original street date) you could easily pick these games up (even brand new) for less than that, i know for a fact Sonic Unleashed was getting sold at around £17.99 last christmas / january in Game, Gamestation and Gameplay.

Either way its still nice for some new titles to be released onto the service, but it would work ALOT better if brand new releases (or games not from this region) are thrown onto the service.

Limited Edition Nintendo Wii Now

Yet again Nintendo are jumping onto the "Limited Edition" bundles as Nintendo have recently announced that pre-orders are now open for a "limited"black Nintendo Wii.

As you can see from the picture the Wii-mote, Wii-Console and Kunchuck are all going to be black, but the Wii base will become a darker shade of grey, and i do have to say it looks pritty slick.

This Limited Edition Wii will come with the standard "Wii Sports" aswell as the ever popular "Wii Sport Resort" and "Motion Plus". So its the exact same package that was recently earlier in the month, but now its black ad in limited amounts.

All major games outlets such as Gamestation, Game and Gameplay and other online retailers such as Play.com are all currently accepting pre-orders for this item. As you can see from the websites this edition of the Nintendo Wii will cost £179.99 (SRP) with is exactly the same price as the previous Nintendo Wii consoles and it is released on the 6th November.

Black Nintendo Accessories are also expected to be released for a limited time period (obviously you do not want a white controller with a black machine) and will cost exactly the same as the original White versions.

Bitfighter, "Cat Sokoban", JVGS, pseudoform, Gun-Fu Deadlands, Hex-a-Hop, racr.. and YouTube overkill

All subscribers to the FGD Planet feed (RSS/Atom) probably would want to add this feed. We split the planet into a game news planet and a development news planet. The latter contains game developer blogs and game engine news.

Bitfighter is a no-gravity multi-player 2-D combat game with a cool name, cool looks, good controls and a quick way to get started. I like the visual style a lot too. (Which reminds of Word War vi by the way.) Unfortunately I was unable to compile on my 64-bit desktop so far (only on my 32-bit netbook).

The video recording qualities of my portable device are weak, so the video I recorded is .. broken. It plays 3x faster than it is supposed to. What you see in it is me flying on an empty server at 500ms latency, trying out the the "mines" and the "burst" weapons.

A game with an even more awesome name is The Villany of Cat Food Inc., which introduced on our forums as a little puzzle game, which I found to be a sokoban-like with interesting and weirdly cute story.

JVGS is the latest game brainchild of the author of Fall of Imiryn. It is a black and white "poem platformer" meaning you (sometimes) jump on platforms made of words -_-. The style is based on xkcd while the levels are based on .svg files - they are pre-rendered for use in the game though. The feeling is melancholic.. The controls are... not polished.. The video has been recorded...

Pseudoform.. aka portalized. aka Open Source Portal. It looks impressive! The game relies on non-free physics and sound libraries but the developers wish to change that. They are also thinking about using the Cube2 engine (although Cube2's main developer considers adding decent physics to his engine as equally challenging as creating an own engine).

Ah Gun-Fu Deadlands (GFD), you are pain, but even more pleasure, simple and forgiving but non-forgiving also. It is a specimen of retro 2D graphics wild west keyboard-move, mouse-aim game. One shot and you die but you also have unlimited lives and unlimited bullets. The lovely piece uses LÖVE. (Version 0.5, so watch your back!) It Is pretty much fantastic and well-received, according to the comments made on GFD's forum.

Do you like to stalk? Gun-Fu Deadlands' dad can be spotted in this photo!

Two years have passed since this blog last mentioned Hex-a-Hop. The project now has new developers (the original author disappeared it seems) and some sounds have been added to the game. The following might be the first recording of the game with sound/music! Who knows, maybe it will convince you to try it if you have not yet...

Are you a fan of Trophy and/or Racer and sad about these two not developing further [BEEP Racer's last release was 24th Dec 2009, shame on my research!] or do you just like top-down racing games? Maybe the new, early-development racr will give you hope.

I have something rather off-topic for you: a 5-headed team that is working on a audio editor and a video editor is looking for #6 in San Francisco, USA. Both their products are rather minimal so far. Let's call this news content-creation-related. :)

By the way: Having problems with the YT videos? I found youtube-dl to be an excellent tool for downloading videos for off-line/no-lag/no-flash-crash-risk watching of videos. `youtube -bt URL1 URL2 ...` will download the best quality and use titles in file names.

Band mathematician contains 24 more additional songs on disc, espically compared to LEGO Rock Band, and Activision have \"definately\" improved on there \"exporting catalogue\" As all preceding Guitar mathematician World Tour & Guitar mathematician 5 Downloadable Content will work on Band Hero, so thats over 150 DLC Tracks that crapper be utilised in the game.

Not only that some of Guitar mathematician Smash Hits (Greatest Hits for EU) and Guitar mathematician World Tour tracks crapper be exported to be played on Band Hero, just like you did with Guitar mathematician 5, whether or not another charge (to goods into band hero) occurs has not been announced. But the cost is exactly the aforementioned as it was previously.

One last abstract is that over 60 tracks on Guitar mathematician 5 crapper be exported to be played on Band hero (costs around 480 MS Points / 500 Wii Points / $5 on PSN) and Band mathematician songs crapper be exported to Guitar mathematician 5 (costs around 420 MS Points / 500 Wii Points / $5 on PSN).

Whether or not \"exporting\" is a good thing, but at least youll intend to save a portion of songs before you transfer the mettlesome on, however at the time the songs \"eligible\" for exporting havent been announced. Fore more information head over to the official Guitar mathematician FAQ Page.

Xbox 360 Sky Player Goes Live

The Xbox 360 Sky Player has finally gone live today on the UK Xbox Live Servers and unlike "original" thoughts where the consoles firmware would have to be updated - all the you have to do is download the Sky player from the video marketplace for free.

The Sky player is a FREE Download, but there is a charge for using the service, which varies depending if you an existing sky customer or a new customer.

If you are a completely new Sky Customer you can pay £15 a month for a basic package, which will give you a selection of "live channels" (such as G.O.L.D, Sky News, Cartoon Network) and a variety of "on demand channels" (such as Sky ONE) - for premium channels like Sky Movies and Sky Sports, a higher fee will be charged, however the monthly price is not a strict contract, so you can "opt-out" at any time and rejoin at any time.

For Existing sky customers, it gets a little bit more complicated because if you are a Sky Multiroom (or a Sky Broadband Customer) you get the live channels and on demand services for FREE (depending on your current sky package, for example if you have everything on your sky package you can watch everything on the xbox sky player - if you pay for movies but not sports, you can only watch the movie channels).

However if you are an existing sky customer that does NOT have multiroom you are required to pay £9.75 a month (which is exactly the same price as having a proper multi-room subscription). But yet again if you paid this £9.75 on your xbox Sky Player you can only watch channels / programmes that mimic your current sky package.

An Online SKY ID Account is also required to login onto the Sky Player, this way it can make sure you watching the right channels and paying the right subscription amounts. If you have already been using Sky Player on a PC or setup a Sky Account online then it will be the same username and password.

So Depending on what sort of package you have depends if it benefits you, for me i will benefit from it as i do not have a sky box in this room and i like to watch movie channels - all i need to do now is wait for the service to actually work (as the Sky Player servers are currently down).

Blender Game Competition 2010

Dear diary...ermm readers *hust*... this is my prototypal post on this blog so please be gentle with me! I am sort of serving discover today and then since qudobup is laboring with other stuff. Beeing a forum regular I had to help discover of course, modify if I strength not have the time to post that often.

Ok today to the really important stuff: Blender (everyones favorite GPL 3D modeling application) also has a build in game engine. And what would be nicer than having a nice rivalry for game creation?

Here is a video of one of the winners from last year (not open-source!):

DukDuk gameplay

So why not join in that get a chunk of the $500 prize?

Why Blender game engine (BGE)?

Wasn't the game engine always the stepchild of the project? Slow, puffed and buggy?

Well things change, and with this years open game project Yo Frankie! things have taken a leap towards greatness!

Speed has been greatly improved, physics are completely desegrated and you can do great eyecandy with the OpenGL 2.0 GLSL shaders (here are some more features).

And things look modify meliorate with the upcoming Blender 2.5.

Getting started with the BGE

So what can the BGE actually do for aspiring FOSS game developers? Well it is a \"game-maker\" for grown-ups... so if you want to make games and not learn how to embellish the the next Evangelist Carmack (tm) the BGE is for you. On a baritone level you requirement no planning at all, much can be done with the \"logic blocks\". And for more enterprising projects the BGE is fully scriptable with Python (which is one of the easiest and most easy planning languages).

And did I mention that games created are completely multi platform? UNIX and MacOSX ports are just one click away!

A beatific prototypal travel would be to head over to blenderartists.com and wave a bit on their game engine sub-forums. There you will encounter free (some GPL or PD even if the license is not always 100% clear) templates (f.e. FPS or network) and some great tutorials.

And most grouping there will freely share their .blend files with you which include all prowess assets, scripts and so on in neat collection (open them in Blender, press \"p\" and the game starts). However not all of it is rattling licensed in a FOSS way, but at least you can use these as great tutorials. Overall one could feature that this is a great way of distributing the \"source\" of complete FOSS games (code, art, penalization etc).

Other sites worth noting are GameBlender and maybe the new Blender Games. And of course for all your Blender news: Blender Nation!

So my excuses for these more game development attendant news... but you module find some nice games to play (done in Blender) in the many links I provided :p

But next time there module be more traditional gaming news!

Update: Some seriously nice eye candy!

This was just released and looks really nice!

Atmospheric scattering made in BGE

Head over to the Blenderartists thread for more info (and .blend download!).
Oh and yes you are free to use it in your own projects!

Speed Dreams, Racer, irrlamb, Violetland

Speed Dreams (SD, formerly known as TORCS-NG) is a fork of TORCS with the aim to

implement exciting new features, cars, tracks and AI opponents to make a more enjoyable game for the player, as well as constantly improving visual and physics realism.

Now I'm not a racing game fan and so the biggest change I noticed between SD and TORCS is the menu look in which the fork really shines. See my comparison over here.

Anyways, I recorded a video. Please excuse my driving un-skills :)

Racer has been making some progress. You can now play player-vs-player (there is no way of 'winning' though) and the levels have been improved as far as I can tell. If you have some ideas to share for this sci-fi racing game in the works, please do comment on their group!

After quite a while, another version of irrlamb has been released! It takes away the old (in my opinion very original) levels and instead presents polished graphics, a friendly tutorial and two skateboard arenas.

I tried the um.. "top-down zombie shooter with rpg elements, I guess" violetland and was impressed by how much fun I had! Its simple gameplay is well-supported by the cool music. I have been playing a match of this fun action-rpg now and then.

Ninja Gaiden 2 - The Dark Sword of Chaos

Retro Game of the Day! Ninja Gaiden 2 - The Dark Sword of Chaos

Ninja Gaiden 2 - The Dark Sword of Chaos by Tecmo, released 1990 for NES. Yes, these were the games that defined who the gamers were!

The first Ninja Gaiden 8-Bit NES game showed up out of nowhere and took everyone by surprise. Tecmo was hardly as respected or known as the likes of Konami or Capcom in those days, yet here they blasted out of left field with this high-quality madness. The first Ninja Gaiden was an iconic instant classic, up there with the likes of Metroid, Bionic Commando, and Castlevania. So when a sequel to this masterpiece was announced, you can bet some eyebrows were raised.

Showing up the year following the original installment, screens of Ninja Gaiden 2 promised to deliver more of the same - lots of jumping, lots of climbing, lots of slashing, lots of "cinema display" dramatic cutscenes. Even during those early peeks of the game, it looked like it was going to be a more polished, refined experience than it's rough-around-the-edges predecessor.

And that was exactly how the new game felt, when one finally did get their mitts on it. The game felt like it was built from the same skeleton as the first - this was actually not too commonplace back in the day - and yet everything was smoother, the graphics were hotter, the levels were less frustrating to navigate (well, for the most part!)

The big deal in this game were your "shadow body" powerups which could be obtained, as the name implies they'd mimic your movements ("options" in many shooter games were the norm, why not in ninja games as well?) and effectively double your firepower. You slash, they slash; you shoot fireballs, they perform accordingly. A neat idea, though one which failed to impress much once you got into the meat of the game. But that's alright, Ninja Gaiden games never really needed little gimmicks like that to prove their worth.

This came out shortly after the introduction of 16-Bit consoles into the consumer marketplace, even then it still commanded a high degree of interest and anticipation. Such was the legacy of the first one. Revenge of Shinobi had been available for Sega Genesis was "the next level" of these types of games and had been out for awhile, and it was high on my list - yet Ninja Gaiden 2 running on the measly 8-Bit unit could still go toe-to-toe with that title, both in looks and gameplay.

As for the breakdown of the game itself - this was the ultimate ninja platformer. You run left to right across most of the gorgeously rendered levels, slashing your enemies and grabbing powerups that are suspended in midair. Many of the enemies have pretty cheap attacks (though much less so than in the first game) so a certain amount of concentration and timing is necessary to make this journey. Patience, grasshopper! Each round ends with a fairly trying boss fight, followed by an (at the time) revolutionary cutscene which advanced the story. Like it's predecessor, Tecmo made a big deal of promoting these, as cutscenes were likely something of a memory hog and so you really didn't see much use of them in 8-Bit games. The Gaiden games went over the top in their storytelling with them (in a good way) so they always looked great, and added a certain amount of dramatic flair not seen in many other games of the period.

The game's levels were definitely lookers as well. The first game had a lot of beautiful landscapes; the sequel matches that as well, with a slightly more polished look overall and some fancy touches here and there to let you see how proud they were (scrolling multiplane parallax during the traincar fight, "hiding" the player behind the ruined castle level). As for the gameplay itself, as mentioned it was directly very derivative of the first title, though not as famously cheap - and therefore, the game was a much easier quest. Still a tough battle, but it was definitely far less challenging than its predecessor (is this a good thing? I am not sure).

One cannot mention Ninja Gaiden games without bringing up the soundtrack - the first one had such an epic score, and the sequel does not disappoint. Everything sounds like gravy (in the good way). Though I think like the soundtrack's case, like the entire experience, this much can be said - while Ninja Gaiden 2 is indeed a very worthy title, and certainly one of the NES' best overall experiences, the first one still shines that much more brightly in my mind for a variety of reasons. Still, this is a game not to be missed, and writing about it makes me want to play through the whole thing again! One of these days I will have to pick up the final installment of this NES trilogy, as I've never actually given it much of a look.

Our game iFist is free for a few days!

This is the first title we released for iPhone, so it is pretty small and simple - we were just figuring the tech out and trying to gauge how much work it would be to create a larger project. It is still a fun little contest, though. Basically it's a sequence memorization game with a twist, and global scoreboards. Have a look - and happy holidays!

Here's how the gameplay works - the CPU will throw a sequence of moves (Rock, Paper, or Scissors). You must input back the opposing sequence to survive the round. If it throws "Rock Rock Scissors Paper Paper," you'd need to counter afterwards with "Paper Paper Rock Scissors Scissors."

Basically watch its sequence, and then recall and execute the proper opposing sequence.

The longer you can last, the larger the sequence will become. There's 3 game modes to challenge you, it's just a very easy game to pick up and play and things will get pretty tense after about half a minute into it!

Quality family entertainment...

So what's up in the Free Gamer world?
Hot news is that the project formerly called Portalized (featured a long time ago on FreeGamer) is now really open-source and renamed Pseudoform! It's still more of a tech-demo, but check this video out:

Or even more videos on the Pseudoform website!

More bloody family entertainment

If you are a fan of real quality entertainment and not afraid of a retro look and this might excite you:

Hypertension Trailer

It is an upcoming remake of Monolith Software's 1997 hit Blood! Personally I think it was by far the greatest FPS of it's time, with a wicked sense of humor... but many people were put off by its bad successor Blood2.

So what's cool about Hypertension? It's based on the updated GPL Doom engine EDGE and is coming to Win/Linus/Mac/Dreamcast and GP2X probably as a FOSS indy title. Here is a nice interview, explaining what it is all about and which features are added (f.e. live action video sequences). So if you have not played Blood, this is definitely worth the wait if you aren't afraid of the retro look. (Remark: The Blood game media was released by Monolith for use but not under an FOSS license).

But I need a blood transfusion NOW!

Ok ok! calm down, help is already there:

Transfusion video

Transfusion is a great FOSS remake of Blood, too. It is based on the Dark Places engine, a much updated Quake 1 engine also used by the Nexuiz game (Which released a new version lately too). It is fully 3D and much of the media has been replaced with real models, but after finishing a more or less playable multiplayer version, development sadly stopped.

Hint: Updating it to a newer Dark Places version or turning it into a Nexuiz mod is probably not a lot of work, and the game is already a lot of fun! Personally I would love to see someone reactivate this project!
